Sizing of Hall effect thrusters with input power and thrust level: An Empirical Approach
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sizing methods can be used to get a first estimate of the required Hall thruster dimensions and operating conditions for a given input power and a corresponding thrust level. After a review of the existing methods, a new approach, which considers the three characteristic thruster dimensions, i.e. the channel length, the channel width and the channel mean diameter as well as the magnetic field, is introduced. This approach is based on analytical laws deduced from the physical principles that govern the properties of a Hall effect thruster, relying on a list of simplifying assumptions. In addition, constraints on the channel wall temperature as well as on the propellant atom density inside the channel are taken into account. The validity of the scaling laws is discussed in light of a vast database that comprises 23 single-stage Hall effect thrusters covering a power range from 10W to 50 kW. Finally, the sizing method is employed to obtain a preliminary geometry and the magnetic field strength for a 20 kW and a 25 kW Hall effect thruster able to deliver a thrust of 1N, respectively 1.5N. Technique to Collimate Ions in a Hall-Effect Thruster Discharge Chamber
High thrust-to-power ratio on Hall-effect thrusters allows for more efficient thrust generation and better overall performance. It allows Hall-effect thrusters to perform more thrust-intensive maneuvers such as orbit raising, thus saving the mass of a second engine purely for those maneuvers. This paper presents the initial performance measurements of aHall-effect thruster using in-channel elec...

This contribution presents a short review of electric propulsion (EP) technologies for satellites and spacecraft. Electric thrusters, also termed ion or plasma thrusters, deliver a low thrust level compared to their chemical counterparts, but they offer significant advantages for in-space propulsion as energy is uncoupled to the propellant, therefore allowing for large energy densities. متن کاملModeling of anomalous electron mobility in Hall thrusters
Accurate modeling of the anomalous electron mobility is absolutely critical for successful simulation of Hall thrusters. In this work, existing computational models for the anomalous electron mobility are used to simulate the UM/AFRL P5 Hall thruster a 5 kW laboratory model in a two-dimensional axisymmetric hybrid particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision code. Comparison to experimental results i...
